A Day of Reflection: Remembrance Sunday
by information news
As the leaves change and autumn arrives, an important date is approaching — Remembrance Sunday, observed on 10th November this year. This significant occasion serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our courageous servicemen and women. In our small community of Bere Ferrers, we gather as we do every year to honour their memory and reflect on the values they fought to protect.
2024 Poppy Appeal
This year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Launch is on Saturday 26th October. Poppies will be available at a number of outlets on the peninsula shortly afterwards. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal supports veterans and their families. Every donation helps provide vital support services.
Ceremony at Bere Ferrers War Memorial
Join us at 10:50 AM at the Bere Ferrers War Memorial for a short but heartfelt service. This solemn gathering will include readings, prayers, and the playing of the Last Post, creating a respectful atmosphere for all attendees. We encourage community members to participate. There will be a church service in St Andrew's Church following the ceremony. All are welcome to attend.
What to Expect:
- Standard bearers and members of the Bere Alston Branch of the Royal British Legion take up position.
- The Exhortation is recited: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them. - Last Post: Sound the Last Post.
- Commemorative Silence: At 11 AM, we will observe a two-minute silence to pay our respects.
- Reveille is sounded.
- Wreath Laying: Community leaders and civic dignitaries will lay wreaths on behalf of their communities and organisatons.
-
The Kohima Epitaph is recited:
When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.
Light Buffet at the Club
Following the service, we invite you to join us in the club for refreshments and a light buffet begining at 1 PM. This informal gathering will provide an opportunity to come together as a community, share memories, and enjoy a meal in honour of our fallen.
Delicious Food: Enjoy a selection of sandwiches, pastries, and refreshments.
