This event is to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s “There but not there” campaign. Maria Hill, who lives in Bere Alston, is attempting to raise funds for a ‘Tommy’ figure to represent each of the 42 men of our parish, who gave their lives in the First World War. So far she has raised enough money to purchase 20 so we need now to raise enough for 22 more. The figures are £29.99 but add on P&p, engraving and VAT and the cost is £38.99 each.
The Tommy figures are made through the British Legion by our Veterans and the sales from them go to:
- Walking With The Wounded
- Combat Stress
- Help for Heroes
- Project Equinox: Housing Veterans and Medical Students
Commonwealth War Graves Foundation
These figures represent every name of the 888,246 British and Commonwealth Fallen of the First World War.
Maria says, “I want to show the villagers what 42 men lost looks like, knowing that they were once part of this village, worked here and had their families here, there sacrifice should never be forgotten. My aim is they will be displayed behind our Memorial in Bere Alston in November on Remembrance Day and each one will be carried up to the church where the service will incorporate these men and a short story on each their lives. After the service, those who have bought one will be given them to take home, the others will be stored by the church and brought out each year”.
If any member of the public would like to buy one of these “Tommy” figures on behalf of our parish, make a donation or If you have any questions regarding this you can contact Maria on 01752 781241 (office number) or mobile 07922892461, or you can email Maria at work to firstname.lastname@example.org
